Tree species mixing affects throughfall in a young temperate forest plantation

چکیده
Rainfall partitioning is a key process in forest ecosystems, affecting evaporation, transpiration and water storage the canopy, litter soil. Although rainfall has been well studied less known about how modified by tree species diversity. To disentangle effects of identity diversity on partitioning, we installed 128 rain gauges an experimental plantation, located Zedelgem (Belgium), part large, multi-site experiment Belgium (FORBIO). With these gauges, monitored throughfall for full year, with temporal resolution two weeks. Based data, analysed (i.e. whether species-specific), non-additive mixtures different from expected amounts based monocultures) richness affects throughfall). First all, found that highly differed between species, due to pronounced effects. The presence Pinus sylvestris [pine] was always associated lower throughfall. Year-round was, example, lowest pine Tilia cordata [lime] (43.8 ± 14.5% open-field rainfall) monocultures (48.6 11.8%). Additionally, were significant, leading 10% decrease reaching floor compared measurements monocultures. Tree acted indirectly, mostly via increased basal area mixed stands. Our findings suggest mixing leads higher than reduction throughfall, which lowered soil moisture plots. Whether this reduced ecosystem functioning remains be quantified.

متن کاملElevated CO2 enrichment induces a differential biomass response in a mixed species temperate forest plantation.
In a free-air carbon dioxide (CO(2)) enrichment study (BangorFACE), Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula and Fagus sylvatica were planted in areas of one-, two- and three-species mixtures (n = 4). The trees were exposed to ambient or elevated CO(2) (580 μmol mol(-1)) for 4 yr, and aboveground growth characteristics were measured. In monoculture, the mean effect of CO(2) enrichment on aboveground woo...
متن کاملComplementary resource use by tree species in a rain forest tree plantation.
Mixed-species tree plantations, composed of high-value native rain forest timbers, are potential forestry systems for the subtropics and tropics that can provide ecological and production benefits. Choices of rain forest tree species for mixtures are generally based on the concept that assemblages of fast-growing and light-demanding species are less productive than assemblages of species with d...

Woody debris, which is supplied by branch litter, is an important component of forest ecosystems as it contains large quantities of organic matter and nutrients. We evaluated changes in branch wood dry weight and nutrient content of six common species (Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Pinus densiflora, Prunus sargentii, Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudosieboldianum, and Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa) in ...
متن کاملSoil moisture variability in a temperate deciduous forest: insights from electrical resistivity and throughfall data
In deciduous forests, soil moisture is an important driver of numerous physical, microbial, and biogeochemical processes. Therefore, characterizing the interactions between vegetation and soil moisture is critical to forecast long-term water resources and ecosystem health. However, these interactions are difficult to measure, both in time and space. Recent studies have shown the ability of elec...
